Alone In the Crowd

Can Elizabeth help Lynne overcome her shyness?

Dear Lynne,
Whatever happens, DO NOT ditch those glasses!
Remember Linda Ronstadt, she told herself. Remember the way Guy’s face looked when he talked about singers he liked. Lynne couldn’t believe he would ever like her.

 Strange but true
Lynne Henry was a character I could really relate to, but she didn’t remind me of myself as much as she reminded me of my mother. Despite being naturally beautiful and really cool, my mom was a really shy person growing up, in no small part because of her perpetual body-image issues. Both Lynne and my mom (as a high-schooler) chose to stay out of the spotlight even when opportunity arose. While Lynne had her musical gifts, my mom was gifted in the theater arts, but almost always chose to help out in back or watch from the wings, fearful of being seen on stage. There’s one more similarity, and this one’s a doozy: my mom’s maiden name was Lynn McHenry.

The mini B Story

OMG, The Sweet Valley High Cheerleaders need new uniforms! They are totes going 2 be the cutest EVA! But first, money will need to be raised somehow. Jessica comes up with maybe the best idea ever, if we’re rating goodness in terms of how ridiculous an idea seems to be. The cheerleaders will have a chair-rocking marathon-slash-dance party. Yes, that’s right, they’ll each take turns rocking for like 12 hours, and raising money based on how many hours each girl rocks. Way cool!

The story that we almost forgot, and the author also paid litle mind to.

Outside, Looking In, verse 1

Day after day I’m feeling kind of lonely,
Day after day it’s him and him only.
Something in his eyes
Made my hopes start to rise.

But he’s part of a world that doesn’t include me.
Nothing he says could ever delude me.
I’ll never win.
This is how it’s always been.
I’m on the outside…looking in.
