Rumors

Can Susan live with the truth?

The author of Rumors clearly didn’t think the book’s VERY prominent B Story was particularly titillating. Otherwise, she would have just gone ahead and called the book “Pregnant with Suspicion” or some such nonsense. Because this was no B Story, my friends. This was a prominent, in-your face storyline.

Due to some strange comments and other evidence (a bag from a baby store), egged on by  their health class lessons on reproduction, Jessica and Elizabeth become convinced that their mother is pregnant. Possibly with more twins. They know their parents want have been keeping a secret from them, so they determine that it must be a secret new baby.

The twins even bring Steven home from college to deal with this drama, and he is quickly convinced as well. Hilarity ensues, because OF COURSE Mrs. Wakefield is not pregnant. The bag from the baby store was a gift for a shower (duh) and the secret is that the Wakefields are going on vacation and leaving the twins home alone. Surprise!

For at least one person in Sweet Valley, beauty alone isn’t enough.
A hollow, dry laugh, almost a sob, sounded in Susan’s throat. … “Everyone’s treating me like I’ve got the plague.”

The B Story

As Lila stood up, Cara grabbed her arm. “Are you sure about this?”

An unpleasant sensation of guilt washed over Lila for a brief moment, but she quickly pushed it out of her mind. “Well,” she said slowly, “nobody really knows anything for sure, do they?”

Then she carefully removed Cara’s hand from her arm and walked away. As she passed by Susan’s table she felt a surge of triumph overcoming the guilt, and she strode out of the cafeteria with a victorious smile.
